Mortgage companies and credit reports?

I recently tried to buy a house that my husband has a rating of 601 Credit and thought I had a 555, but when the mortgage company controlled my score was 595 and my husband was a 495. We must also be in a house in November 2009 how when no one is going to help if we have a 620? Our bills are paid on time, but I went about 6 months into my program of debt. PLEASE HELP.
