How "long" seems to solve the debt on the credit history?

Not even sure if I can make debt payments. Only the investigation. Some say, your credit after paying the amount of the liquidation of the debt by an average of 2-3 years. Although some elements that I have read, stays on your credit record for up to 10 years? What is the impact on your credit? To what extent these agencies usually charge? Only fear with scams.
