Question on validation of debt?

I am pursued by a collection agency in California. I intend to submit a response in court in 3 weeks, but now I can send a request to validate the debt? Is this allowed? So I ask you a validation? The collection agency real or attorney present? Moreover, if a lawyer who can give me legal advice on how to proceed with this collection of demand would be very happy. I think I can afford a good lawyer right now and I think represent me. I just want to make sure everything correctly. Thanks for any help.
