Are comparisons to the Roman Empire accurate?
In Rome, the government provided ‘bread and circus’ for its citizens – - much like, say, nationalized healthcare and other benefits. This was paid for with the fruits of empire – invading other countries and putting them to work for Rome, taking their spoils.
We have 21st century ‘bread and circus,’ but it’s paid for with debt. We invade other countries but we don’t take the spoils.
You want a comparison, look at how the Romans became more and more socially immoral and liberal as the empire got weaker and weaker… leading to it’s downfall.
