security clearance on bad credit?

okay I have bad credit and in the process of consolidating my loans and i believe i have to get a security clearance to be an army medic so is there any chance that i will be able to get the clearance if i come up front to them and tell them that i will be using the money from the military to pay it off? I’m a college student and I’ve had debt from using too many cards to pay for books, utility bills that my roomates haven’t paid me for and such. Someone told me i wouldn’t get a clearance because of my credit (then again the person that told me that lied about their credit and wasn’t granted one) or how do i even prove i’m responsible?

It has zero to do with State. DOD determines your eligibility. You need to file suit with your roommates, to show you are recouping your losses. You also need to pay up, and show you are making payments.
DO NOT HIDE ANY OF THIS. If you do, you’re done. If some of your debt is due to student loans, that’s considered “good debt” and won’t be an issue-provided your keeping with payments.
Finally it’s NOT silly, nor does it have to do with stealing. The security issue is, folks like you with huge debts, starting out on 2Lt/E1-2 pay are prime targets for recruitment by foreign intelligence services.
If you need an example, Aldrich Ames the worst spy in US history had debt issues, and was easily recruited.
